Opening Ceremony of Exercise Lamitye 2026

The Seychelles Defence Forces (SDF) officially commenced the 11th edition of Exercise Lamitye with an opening ceremony held today, 09 March 2026 at the Military Training and Support Centre (MTSC) at Ile Perseverance, marking the start of a two-week joint training exercise between the SDF and the Indian Army’s Assam Regiment.

Exercise Lamitye—meaning “Friendship” in Creole—is a biennial joint military exercise between the Republic of Seychelles and the Republic of India, first initiated in 2001. The exercise aims to strengthen defence cooperation, enhance interoperability between the two forces, and promote the exchange of operational knowledge and military skills.

During the opening day, both contingents delivered presentations outlining the history, traditions, and military heritage of their respective nations. Participants also took part in a case study presentation on Operation Black Tornado conducted by the Indian Army. In addition, familiarization sessions were conducted on the weapons and equipment used by both forces, allowing personnel to better understand each other’s operational capabilities.

The day concluded on a friendly and sporting note with a volleyball match between the two contingents, fostering camaraderie, mutual respect, and the spirit of partnership that defines Exercise Lamitye.

Over the coming days, the exercise will feature a series of joint tactical drills, training exchanges, and field activities, aimed at strengthening professional bonds and enhancing the capacity of both forces to operate together effectively.
