24 new privates join the ranks of the SPDF

The Seychelles People’s Defence Forces yesterday welcomed 24 new members into its rank, following the completion of their three months of compulsory intensive military training.

The new group – five women and 19 men – took their oath of allegiance at the Seychelles Defence Academy auditorium at Ile Persévérance in the presence of chief of defence forces, Colonel Clifford Roseline, chief of staff Colonel Michael Rosette, members of the defence forces council, senior officers and relatives.

The 24 new soldiers underwent their training at the recruit training centre (RTC) at Barbarons in five phases including induction which covers military routines, basic combat training, naval orientation, basic knowledge and final field exercise and assessments.

Commanding officer of the RTC, Major Jude Raoul, explained that since last year they have devised a new training programme to fit the new era and recommendations of modern military, incorporating new topics which help the soldiers to grow not only military-wise, but also as individual.

Private Graham emerged as the best, collecting a hat-trick of awards, including best academic, best outdoor and best overall recruit during training.

Addressing the new soldiers Colonel Roseline urged them to adopt a positive attitude and be role models for other youths, by taking pride in their work and putting their country first in everything they do.

He also warned them regarding the force’s zero policy to substance abuse and asked them to maintain a high level of discipline at all times so that they will not get carried away and be influenced to take part in negative activities.

The new privates also received their national flags which would be worn on their uniforms while performing their duties, before receiving blessings from military chaplain Deacon Louis Agathine.

On behalf of her colleagues, private Marcia Camille read the vote of thanks before handing over to Colonel Roseline a special message for the Commander in Chief of the Defence Forces President Wavel Ramkalawan.
