SEYCHELLES PARTICIPATES IN AFRICAN UNION MEETING ON MARITIME SECURITY GOVERNANCE
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – 3rd September 2026
Brigadier General Jean Attala, Deputy Chief of Defence Forces of the Seychelles Defence Forces, participated in the African Union Sensitisation and Coordination Meeting on Maritime Security Governance and the Consultation on the establishment of an Africa Coast Guard Functions Forum, held from 2nd to 3rd September 2026 at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The meeting, convened by the African Union Commission through its Departments of Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS) and Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment (ARBE), brought together representatives of Member States and maritime security stakeholders to strengthen continental cooperation on maritime security governance.
During his intervention, Brigadier General Jean Attala expressed Seychelles’ support for the proposed establishment of an Africa Coast Guard Functions Forum, highlighting its relevance to strengthening cooperation and coordination in maritime security. He underscored the importance of safeguarding Seychelles’ maritime domain, particularly given the country’s strong dependence on the ocean and its Blue Economy.
Seychelles’ participation underscores its continued engagement with the African Union and its commitment to strengthening collective African approaches to maritime security governance. The country recognises that enhanced coordination, information sharing and cooperation among Member States and maritime security institutions are essential to ensuring a secure and resilient maritime environment.
Brigadier General Jean Attala was accompanied by Ms. Trisha Hoareau, Second Secretary at the Embassy of Seychelles in Ethiopia.
