WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY - Message

A message from the Seychelles Defence Forces Chief Medical Officer – Dr. Dania Woodcock

Today is an opportunity to recognize the importance of mental health globally, a reminder that it impacts every human being, regardless of their profession or background. In the military, we witness bravery, resilience, and sacrifice every day. Our soldiers face myriad challenges and undergo immense pressure in their service to our nation. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that mental health is just as important as physical fitness and beyond.

This day serves as a reminder that mental health issues can affect anyone. The ever-present stigma surrounding mental health restricts many from seeking the necessary support and treatment they require. We must actively promote mental health awareness throughout our society, making mental well-being a priority for individuals, families, schools, workplaces, and indeed within the military community. By providing education, access to resources, and creating safe spaces to discuss mental health, we can break down barriers and empower those in need to seek help without fear or judgment.

To all military personnel, remember that seeking assistance for mental health concerns is a sign of strength, not weakness. We must remind ourselves that, just as we would readily attend to a broken bone or a physical ailment, we must prioritize our mental well-being and seek support when needed. We owe it to ourselves, our comrades, and our families to address mental health issues proactively and compassionately.

On this World Mental Health Day, let us unite to support mental health, promoting understanding, compassion, and acceptance. Together, we can create a stronger and healthier world.
