From 23 – 25 March 2026, Seychelles Defence Forces (SDF) personnel had the opportunity to participate in a Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law Workshop organised by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA). The seminar brought together service members to strengthen understanding of the legal and ethical frameworks that guide military operations in today’s complex security environment.
Key discussions focused on the importance of observing and respecting human rights at all times, as well as maintaining respect for civil authority in the conduct of duties. Participants also explored the principles of the African Charter, reinforcing regional commitments to human dignity and accountability.
Critical operational topics included the lawful use of force in law enforcement, the absolute prohibition against torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment and the prevention of sex-based violence and trafficking in persons. These sessions highlighted the responsibility of military personnel to uphold the highest standards of conduct, both in peace and conflict.
The workshop further examined the legal frameworks governing international and non-international armed conflicts, alongside practical guidance on rules of engagement and lawful targeting under the Law of Armed Conflict. These discussions aimed to enhance operational effectiveness while ensuring compliance with international legal obligations.
This engagement underscores the continued commitment to professionalism, discipline and respect for human rights, core values that remain essential in building trust, legitimacy and mission success in all areas of operation.
